Blood Of The Innocent LARPers
Back for another bite of vampire drama, What We Do In The Shadows flutters its way back on screen for its second episode. With deeper characterisation and the beginning of the vampires’ master plan of taking over the world, this mockumentary continues its reign of hilarious comedy in a smartly written script. The episode begins with Guillermo leading the vampire trio to the LARPers; the group of virgins from the first episode. After plotting their next move, the vampires reconvene back home where they lament the presence of The Baron and the creepy presence of his familiar. Deciding they need to do something about it, they hold a private meeting where Colin shows up and lends them his energy-sapping ideas.This in turn leads them to city council where they can make some meaningful change. From here, the rest of the episode takes on a pretty formulaic comedy routine as the trio of vampires go about trying to persuade or seduce the council members into seeing their point of view. From a pile of dead raccoons left on the porch to Nadja turning one of the LARPers into a vampire, there’s some good plot progression here mixed in with some hilarious sketches. While the episode itself doesn’t quite have the same impact the first had, there’s enough here to make for a thoroughly entertaining, enjoyable watch nonetheless. The jokes around the Baron’s familiar and the moments inside the city council are certainly the funniest though, with the latter including footage from actual CCTV cameras inside the room helping to really sell the effect. What We Do In The Shadows continues to be one of the bigger comedy surprises of the year. While the episode doesn’t quite hit the same lofty heights the first achieved, there’s enough here to make for a thoroughly entertaining, enjoyable watch nonetheless. Quite where the show goes from here is anyone’s guess but given what we’ve seen thus far, it’s a ride well worth taking.
