With a second season seeming unlikely and a relatively unsatisfying finish to the Viv Rook story, Years and Years delivers a good, but never-quite-great finale to a fleeting dystopian drama that manages to strike while the tumultuous political iron is hot....

We follow James as he carries out his work archiving broadcast video tapes for a local television station. On one of the tapes, there is evidence of a ‘broadcast signal intrusion,’ an act of piracy wherein the broadcast is hacked by somebody who then plants their own footage into the transmission. The footage contains images of a masked woman inside a set of a house and there is strange audio in the background....
Kevin, however, is less of a rebel than his friend and he wants nothing more than to fit in with his peers. Hunter seems to hold him back in this regard but as the movie progresses, the two friends strengthen their bonding with one another when they prepare for the upcoming Battle Of the Bands competition. This isn’t to say the movie avoids the painful trials and tribulations that marked her journey and shaped her character. Most of the key moments that form a part of her story are present and correct here, including the various forms of abuse that she suffered at the hands of the men in her life, but it’s perhaps too respectful of Franklin, as it skims over the addiction problems that were a consequence of the traumas she suffered as both a child and adult....

On the surface, The Book of the Most Precious Substance has a lovely fantasy element, a deep undercurrent of erotica and danger, alongside a pacey story that immediately sucks you into the characters’ world....
