So without further ado, we present 10 movies to check out when you’ve finished watching Source Code.

Edge Of Tomorrow

Edge Of Tomorrow is another time-loop movie, this time taking the idea of a big, expansive battlefield and forcing a soldier into reliving this epic battle over and over again. At the center of all this is Major William Cage, who finds himself dropped into what appears to be a suicide mission. Aliens have declared war on Earth and hit the planet with an unrelenting assault. Killed within minutes, Cage slowly starts to memorize the attack patterns and eventually teams up with fellow survivors, determined to try and stop this endless cycle before it’s too late. Edge Of Tomorrow thrives on its big action set pieces, and this movie is a real sci-fi spectacle.

Looper

Looper is another of those films that warrants repeat watches and delivers some pretty neat tricks with time. Set in 2074, the rules of the world revolve around the mob sending their target to the past to get rid of them. When the protagonist of this tale is sent back to kill himself however, it brings with it a twisty-turny, unpredictable picture that keeps you guessing right to the very end. This is one of those movies that plays better with its themes and tone than it does the sci-fi elements, but it’s one heck of an experience nonetheless. This one should definitely be on your radar.

The Butterfly Effect

You could easily poke holes in The Butterfly Effect’s logic but there’s no denying that the film makes for an enthralling watch. Like Inception, this movie takes a unique idea and completely runs with it, producing a whole world around our protagonist that’s incredibly rewarding to watch play out. The story itself revolves around Evan Treborn who suffers blackouts during significant events of his life. As he grows up, he starts to remember these key moments, which shape the man into the person he becomes. Thrilling, exciting and full of neat ideas, this is the quintessential thriller for a real mind-bending ride.

Twelve Monkeys

Alongside the excellent quality of its small screen cousin, the original big screen movie of Twelve Monkeys is just as endearing. This sci-fi movie plays on the idea of rewriting history and revolves around a man sent back through time to stop a viral outbreak from dooming humanity. It’s a simple idea in truth and one that works well to produce a decent 90’s thriller you’re unlikely to forget in a hurry. Bruce Willis puts on a great performance too and the movie lends itself to some decent twists and turns along the way.

Predestination

Predestination is another time loop movie that manages to keep you guessing right up until the very end. In fact, Predestination is pretty clever with its twists, keeping its cards close to its chest until the film’s conclusion. The plot centers on a temporal agent who is sent on an intricate series of time-travel journeys designed to ensue the continuation of his own career for all eternity. Now onto his final assignment, this agent is tasked with pursuing the one criminal that’s eluded him through time. To give much more away would be disservice to this excellent movie. If you’re looking for a good time-bending hit, this one is definitely worth a watch.

Triangle

Triangle is a clever film. It’s a movie that takes a simple mystery and folds it into an origami-shaped brain-twisting puzzle. The story works on several levels, and definitely benefits from repeat watches too. The story revolves around Jess, a young girl who heads off on a yacht with a group of friends. The whole time though she feels like something is wrong, crescendoing into a storm that forces them to seek shelter and refuge on a passing ocean liner. Only, Jess begins to feel a sense of Deja vu, like she’s been on this ship before. With someone seemingly hunting them down, it’s up to Jess and the others to figure out what’s happening before it’s too late. Cleverly written, full of some great reveals and incredibly tense, Triangle is certainly a time loop movie you should check out.

Memento

Another Nolan classic, Memento is a story that plays out in reverse. This isn’t just a gimmick though, and instead the movie works beautifully by playing on this concept time and again. The main protagonist of the piece has a severe case of short term memory loss and as the movie progresses, we shift further backwards through time to uncover exactly what’s going on. With the end already known, it’s left up to us to work out why this incident has occurred. With black and white segments along with colour being used to show time played out in both directions, Memento is a stunning achievement and an excellent movie that’ll keep you guessing until the end.

Coherence

Coherence is one heck of a thriller. It’s a movie that rewards you for repeat watches while delivering an absolutely gripping screenplay from start to finish. The premise is simple – a group of friends sit down to eat dinner when a blackout plunges them in darkness. With a comet flying overhead, the only lights in the neighbourhood stem from a house down the road. While this sounds simple, the movie soon turns into a puzzle box labyrinth that plays with the idea of time in a very clever way. We won’t spoil anything more but suffice to say this is a really great indie flick and well worth jumping into blind. You can read our thoughts on Coherence in our movie review here!

Donnie Darko

Donnie Darko is a mind-bending movie that plays on its surrealist and horror imagery perfectly. It’s also a movie that warrants repeat watches – especially given the way it ends. The basic premise revolves around a disillusioned teenager called Donnie Darko who doesn’t get along too well with other people. After narrowly escaping a bizarre accident, Donnie finds himself plagued by visions of a man in a large rabbit suit who manipulates him to commit a series of crimes. From here, the movie takes on a life of its own, delivering an unforgettable experience that’s best to go into blind.

Ex Machina

Playing heavily on the psychological implications of an artificial being gaining human-like sentience, Ex Machina is a stunning piece of science fiction. This films will grip you from its opening moment to its shocking finale. The story focuses on Caleb Smith, a programmer who wins a competition to visit CEO Nathan Bateman in a private mountain resort. Upon learning he’s to be the human part of a turing test for robot Ava, Caleb begins questioning everything around him. This includes his own existence and what it means to be human. The beautiful setting of the remote mountain resort is a clever juxtaposition unto itself; the beauty outside contrasting against the claustrophobic and suffocating setting inside. The ending will almost certainly leave a chill running down your spine too. This one’s a must-watch. You can read our thoughts on Ex Machina in our movie review here!
